My path to midwifery started as a child when I discovered a fascination with birth by seeing pictures in books at our local library. Following college I completed the Physician Assistant Program in Winston-Salem, NC, then worked as a PA on the acute leukemia service at Baptist Hospital for 5 years. After moving to Seattle in 1994 I volunteered in a community health clinic for a year and during that time found myself once again drawn to the power of birth. I entered the midwifery program at Seattle Midwifery School in 1996.
After graduation I started Welcome Home Midwifery Service in Seattle in 1999 with Wendy Rowe, LM (I was our first client). Wendy and I also worked in a practice at Puget Sound Birth Center in Kirkland. We closed our practice in 2005 when Wendy decided to return to her home in Vermont (I was our last client). Suzy and Marge asked me to join them here at SHMS, which I did in January, 2006. In addition to my clinical practice, I have enjoyed being on faculty at Seattle Midwifery School, where I co-teach several courses. Participating in the education of the next generation of midwives is such a rewarding experience.
I am blessed with a beautiful family: husband Fred, and daughters Isla (1999) and Maevis (2005), both born at home. The experience of receiving attentive midwifery care deepened my commitment to provide such care to other women and families.
